In the 1930s, electricity production, supply, and pricing varied considerably depending on the provider and the region. After the war, the creation of a single public electricity service became essential. On April 8, 1946, Électricité de France (EDF) and Gaz de France (GDF), an integrated state monopoly for the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity, were established.
