Amoghasiddhi: The Unborn Wisdom of Fearless Action ~ Karma Dhyani Buddha Mantra: OM AMOGHASIDDHI AH
The North and the Unborn: A Meditation on Amoghasiddhi In the context of the Unborn Mind, the Dhyani Buddha Amoghasiddhi represents the transformative power of the North; the direction of the midnight sun, where darkness and light are recognized as a singular, non-dual transparency. Amoghasiddhi is the embodiment of Fearlessness and the All-Accomplishing Wisdom. From a Zen perspective, he is not an external deity to be petitioned, but a symbolic mirror of the Mind's innate capacity to act without the interference of the egoic "I." The Karma Family and the Wisdom of Action Amoghasiddhi heads the Karma Family. In the common tongue, "karma" is often mistaken for a ledger of rewards and punishments. However, through the lens of the Unborn, Karma is simply Action; the spontaneous, effortless movement of the Absolute through the relative world. The Transformation of Envy: The "poison" associated with this family is envy or jealousy; the restless comparison of one's own "self" against another. Amoghasiddhi transmutes this friction into the All-Accomplishing Wisdom. Effortless Accomplishment: When the Mind rests in its original, unborn state, action becomes "actionless action" (wu-wei). There is no "actor" striving for a result; there is only the perfect, timely response to the present moment. This is why Amoghasiddhi’s mudra is the Abhaya Mudra; the gesture of fearlessness. One who sees through the illusion of the separate self has nothing to lose and nothing to fear. Color (Green): He is associated with the color green, representing the lush, generative power of nature and the "wind" element. Like the wind, the Unborn Mind is invisible and untouchable, yet it moves all things. The Double Vajra (Vishva-vajra): His symbol is the crossed or double thunderbolt. It represents the absolute stability of the Mind in the face of all phenomenal activity. It is the "immovable" center of the turning wheel. The Mantra: Om Amoghasiddhi Ah The mantra serves as a sonic bridge to this state of fearlessness. Om: The primordial resonance of the Unborn. Amoghasiddhi: The recognition of "Unfailing Success"; the realization that the Absolute never fails to manifest. Ah: The seed syllable of the Unborn, representing the "A" that is never birthed and never dies. The Śūraṅgama Mantra is one of the longest and most complex dharanis in the Buddhist canon. In the context of the Karma Division (North), Amoghasiddhi is invoked to transmute worldly obstacles and "demon armies" which, in the Unborn Mind tradition, are understood as the chaotic proliferations of the egoic mind into the All-Accomplishing Wisdom. The mantra is traditionally divided into five sections. The specific Sanskrit reconstruction for the section honoring the Five Tathagata Families (The Five Divisions) is provided below. The Five Directions Section (Invocation) Namo Bhagavate Śākyamunaye (Center - Vairocana/Sakyamuni - Buddha Division) Namo Bhagavate Akṣobhyāya (East - Vajra Division) Namo Bhagavate Ratnaketurājāya (South - Ratna Division) Namo Bhagavate Amitābhāya (West - Padma Division) Namo Bhagavate Amoghasiddhaye (North - Karma Division) The Specific Mantra of Amoghasiddhi In the context of the Śūraṅgama Sutra's ritual practice, the shorter seed-syllable mantra often used to connect with Amoghasiddhi’s energy is: Oṃ Amoghasiddhi Āḥ Hūṃ The Role of the Karma Division In the Śūraṅgama assembly, the Karma Division in the North represents the power of subjugation. From a Chan perspective, this is not a violent act but the "cutting off" of the conceptualizing mind. Host of the North: Amoghasiddhi acts as the "General" of the north, commanding the forces that neutralize envy and the "demons" of restless striving. Spiritual Function: By chanting the mantra, the practitioner aligns with the Unborn Mind’s capacity to remain unmoving (the North Star) while simultaneously accomplishing all necessary actions in the world of form. The Unmoving North The wind blows through the hollows of the mountain, yet the mountain does not give chase. This is the North: the midnight sun where the eye no longer divides the shadow from the light. In the Karma Division, there are no weapons, only the sudden stillness of the double vajra. The demon armies are but smoke; the restless, hungry ghosts of "I should" and "I am not." They dissolve when they meet the gaze of the Unborn, shattered by a silence that needs no voice. Action arises like a ripple on a deep lake; it completes itself before the thought of "doing" begins. No striving. No grasping for the fruit of the limb. Just the green flash of the All-Accomplishing Wisdom, where the hand moves because the heart is empty. To stand in the North is to be the transparency through which the Absolute breathes. The mantra is not a shield, but the sound of the ego’s armor falling away, leaving only the fearlessness of the Void performing its perfect, silent work. ~ For the benefit of numberless sentient beings.
