It was formally known as Kafiristan and Bluristan until the inhabitants were converted from an animist religion to Islam in 1895, and thence the region has become known as Nuristan (the land of light). Beautiful forests, rivers and mountains have made this province a unique place not only in Afghanistan but also across the world. Nuristan is now the third national park of Afghanistan. Its beauty is compared to Switzerland, while most of its parts are still unseen and for sure can be a more attractive place for tourists.
