They can be found in Italy, Spain, the United States, Scandinavia… and also in Japan. We traveled to rural Japan to understand what lies behind these abandoned houses. There, we met Coline, a French woman who has been living in the Japanese countryside for several years. She bought a traditional Japanese house for €29,000 in a village a few hours from Osaka. Why are these houses so inexpensive? What does it mean to buy property in a region where young people are leaving and villages are emptying out? Is it truly an opportunity… or a huge challenge?
