Пленный немец услышал советского полковника — и сказал: «Он передавал нам эшелоны»
June 1943. Trains with fuel, ammunition and replenishment for the North Caucasian Front are passing through the railway junction in Tikhoretsk. But the enemy repeatedly learns secret information: a new train route, a changed departure time, and a place where tanks are unloaded. Decisions are made at the last moment, but the Germans are already ready to strike. After the arrest of the German signalman, the unexpected happens. In the corridor of the railway administration, the prisoner hears the voice of Soviet Colonel Sergei Vorontsov and declares: "I know that voice. He gave us information about your echelons. All suspicion falls on the colonel. He had access to secret transportation, his voice was actually heard by the Germans, and his biography reveals hidden twenty-five days spent in enemy-occupied territory. But SMERSH captain Konstantin Lavrov notices a strange thing: the prisoner was listening not only to the voice. On the phone, he could hear the clatter of a typewriter, the honking of steam locomotives, and the conversations of people in the office. If the colonel had never contacted the enemy, then how did his real voice end up on the other end of the German wire? There are only a few hours left before the arrival of the new flight train with aviation fuel. Lavrov will have to find out who turned the official telephone line into a leak channel and why the connection was cut off just before the transmission of the main figure. This story is an artistic military detective. The plot, characters, and specific investigation were invented by the author, but the script is inspired by historical research on the work of SMERSH, German reconnaissance and sabotage groups, military railway transportation, front-line communications, and the fight against enemy agents during the Great Patriotic War.
