Intro to Sulfate Attack!
Sulfate attack is one of the most miss understood concrete deterioration mechanism. The video explains how there are two forms of sulfate attack. The first type is chemical sulfate attack. This is where sulfates cause new hydration products to form within concrete that cause damage to the concrete. With additional exposure the concrete hydration products are attacked and this causes the concrete to dissolve. Next, the video talks about physical salt attack or sulfate attack. This occurs when salts become dissolved in water and penetrate through concrete and evaporate on the other surface. When the moisture penetrates it leaves salts behind that causes the surface of the concrete to spall off. The key difference between these mechanisms is that with chemical sulfate attack the salts cause a new product to form. Methods to suppress this deterioration are also discussed.
