Dom Álvaro was the first successor of Saint Josemaría Escrivá, and Marcelo recounts a bit about his history with the Blessed, which began with a lack of role models in both his professional and personal life. During this period, while searching for such a role model, especially professionally, he encountered Opus Dei and saw in Dom Álvaro the role model he sought as an engineer. Born in 1914, he possessed a great intellectual capacity and three very important and present virtues: Industriousness (Saint Josemaría relied heavily on him because he had a great capacity for work); Humility (he truly understood his own worth and the greatness of the person he supported – Saint Josemaría); and Serenity. From a Christian family, he was a good man and lived an ordinary life! There's an event in his history where, as a young man, he helped needy people with catechism classes, and because of the Spanish Civil War, there was hatred towards things related to the clergy. On one of these occasions, he was injured in the head with a screwdriver. He was doing work that meant nothing to him, and his reaction of forgiveness was unexpected. He didn't start a fight either, and this shows his greatness of soul and maturity from a very young age. He came to know Opus Dei through an aunt who began participating in the organization's formation centers. This aunt told Saint Josemaría about her nephew, who said he would pray for Álvaro even before meeting him. The moment came when they met later. During the war, he had to enlist in the army and soon went to the front. One day he learned that Saint Josemaría was going to give a retreat, and he decided to flee the war to participate in the retreat and then return. The saint had barely begun his meditation when Álvaro fell asleep, having walked for more than 24 hours to reach the place. Saint Josemaría later said that this was worth more than a few hours of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament because of the sacrifice made to know Jesus better. The saint saw the greatness of Don Álvaro! In 1935 he joined the work as a celibate ("numerary") and in 1944 he was ordained a priest. Saint Josemaría had him as his confessor from the time of his ordination. With Don Álvaro's advice, they went to Rome and thus the work began to expand greatly in the midst of the Second World War! They were concerned with God's will! External situations only made some things more difficult, but they continued according to God's will. There is an instance where, during the construction of the Opus Dei headquarters in Rome, St. Josemaría lacked the financial resources to pay the workers, and Don Álvaro, who was responsible for the project's finances, was bedridden and ill. Even so, St. Josemaría asked him to try and raise the money because only he could help. The next day, all the money had been collected, and the saint asked him: "Álvaro, how did you manage that?" And he replied: "By obeying, Father." Marcelo illustrates the great humility of a servant and the recognition of being subordinate to those who truly have authority over us. One must be very careful with pride and disobedience. After many years with St. Josemaría, the saint passed away, and Don Álvaro became his successor in Opus Dei.
