They are about the thickness of a hose, connect continents, and, in practice, are the most important infrastructure in the modern world. Chile wanted to add another one: the Chile-China Express, 20,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable connecting Valparaíso with Hong Kong without passing through the United States. The advantages for the country were enormous: eliminating the toll they pay to American telecoms, halving the distance their data travels to their largest trading partner, and becoming the digital hub of the Southern Cone. Trump responded by revoking visas for Chilean officials and unleashing a diplomatic crisis that ended with the presidential transition process breaking down eight days before the inauguration. The new president, Kast, Trump's favorite, said he knew nothing about the project. Boric said he had been told about it months earlier. It's impossible to know who is lying, but there's a third version that explains everything and makes perfect sense. What we do know is that China hasn't given up: it's already making moves in Peru, where the port of Chancay has been its bridgehead in South America for years. In this video, we analyze what submarine cables are, why this particular one made Trump so nervous, who is lying in the Chilean scandal, and whether it's only a matter of time before this same conflict erupts in another Latin American country.
