It was the first time in almost 60 years that Abu Dhabi had broken with Riyadh, and it wasn't a warning: it was a devastating blow. Saudi Arabia suddenly lost its third-largest producer, the most disciplined member of the cartel, and the second with the greatest capacity to increase production when needed. And it did so without consulting anyone. Because the real separation had been brewing for years: the two countries have been fighting each other in Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, and the Congo, building rival spheres of influence around the Red Sea while posing together in OPEC photos. But how did the Emirates, a country the size of Andalusia without its own army until twenty years ago, come to challenge the Gulf's historical leader?
