The parable of the wheat and the tares echoes an old lament. “How long, Lord?” This cry runs through the Psalms, dwells in Job, and rises in the throats of the prophets. We utter it every time we look at the world and see the wicked prosper, the tares invade the field, and God remain unmoved. The parable of the wheat and the tares confronts the question differently, highlighting the patience of a master who refuses to let anything be uprooted prematurely. Not out of indulgence for evil, but out of concern for good. Because there is wheat in that field, a small remnant, fragile and tenacious, which gives God his reason to wait. And what if that wheat were us? A word that shifts our perspective, soothes impatience, and perhaps makes us a little more merciful.
