Easter Was Named After a Pagan Goddess — SPINOZA Found the Pope's Order

Most people don't realise that Easter has a completely different name in almost every language on Earth. In French it's Pâques. In Spanish, Pascua. In Italian, Pasqua. In Greek, Πάσχα. Every single one derives from the Hebrew Pesach — Passover. Only English and German use the word Easter, or Ostern. Spinoza asked why. And when you follow the evidence he left behind, the answer is uncomfortable. The English name traces directly to Ēostre — an Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring and fertility, documented by the Northumbrian monk Bede in 725 AD in his work De Temporum Ratione. Bede wrote that the month of April was called Ēosturmōnaþ after this goddess, and that Christian missionaries retained her name for the Paschal season when they converted the Anglo-Saxons. This wasn't hidden in some obscure manuscript. A monk wrote it down, in Latin, in a document that has been available to scholars for over a thousand years. Bede's account is corroborated by over 150 Romano-Germanic votive inscriptions to the Austriahenae — a related goddess figure — discovered in the Rhineland in 1958, dating to the second century AD. The goddess existed long before Bede described her. What Spinoza understood — and what his Tractatus Theologico-Politicus documented with meticulous care — is that religious institutions do not erase the cultures they absorb. They rename them. Pope Gregory I wrote to Abbot Mellitus in 601 AD with explicit instructions: do not destroy the pagan temples of the Anglo-Saxons. Transform them. Do not forbid their festivals. Redirect them. The absorption of Eostre into Easter was not an accident of language. It was institutional policy, documented in Latin, ordered from Rome.
