Our car camping trip took us to Shimabara. Our morning at a roadside station began with a castella tasting. Surrounded by the sweet aroma, we enjoyed a leisurely morning. Our first stop was the majestic Shimabara Castle. Maron accompanied us to the castle tower. As we climbed the stairs, our thoughts wandered to Shimabara's history. There, we experienced an atmosphere and scenery that can only be experienced on foot. For lunch, we had Shimabara's specialty rokubeito nyumen (rokubeito noodle soup) at a restaurant in front of the castle. We also sampled Shimabara ham and Unzen ham, savoring the flavors of the land. Next, we visited Himawari Roadside Station, where we toured houses damaged by the mudslides on Mount Fugen. It was a time to reflect on the power of nature and the path we have taken since then. And to cap off the day, we enjoyed Shimabara Chanpon at Horaku. It was a bowl that truly warmed our bodies after all that walking. This time, the theme was "Healthy Car Camping & 10,000 Steps a Day." A 70-year-old and a 64-year-old walked at their own pace without pushing themselves, and enjoyed a day packed with sweet treats, history, learning, and delicious food.
