March 29, 2024 | Today we visit a place with a grim and sad history from years past – the site of the 2017 summer heavy storm in Rytel, Pomerania, Poland. What is now mostly fields was once a dense forest. The bow echo storm of the night of August 11, 2017, lasted approximately 15-45 minutes, with winds reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h (100 mph), enough to devastate not only hectares of densely overgrown forests of the Bory Tucholskie for decades, tearing off roofs, destroying the property and homes of many families, and even claiming the lives of six people. The altered roof facades in the element's destructive path are still visible today, but the most striking feature is the emptiness... Emptiness, as far as the eye can see, was once loaded with forest and wildlife, now fills the area from all sides. Although it's already clear that nature is slowly recovering in the area where the storm passed, it will still be decades before the forest recovers and returns to its former glory. Sometimes it's hard to believe how much a place can transform itself so dramatically thanks to the forces of nature... The Rytel Wies train station, located on line 203, the popular 'Ostbahn' between Chojnice and Tczew, was also in the path of the hurricane's force. It managed to survive the storm and remain intact to this day. Although, looking at the condition of the station building, one might get the impression that 'survived' is an exaggeration – peering through the literally 'boarded-up' windows reveals how neglected and deserted it is. Fortunately for travelers, the external infrastructure has been renovated and modernized. That day, an unusual freight train is approaching Rytel Wies on this railway line. It's an out-of-gauge train, led by SKPL's SM31-025 diesel loco. Traveling from Wroclaw Gadow to Gdynia Port, it must yield to an oncoming passenger car to continue toward Tczew. The Ostbahn line is single-track here, having lost its second track after World War II. The passenger train turns out to be a red 'Wadloper', the SN83-005 DMU, a Tczew-Chojnice train. Incidentally, it's also in SKPL livery, like a SM31-025 with a this out-of-gauge train, but in service with passenger POLREGIO company. 😉 After the 'Wadloper' clears the route, the soundscape and views through the cameras and drones is occupied by the aforementioned SM31-025. With the sounds familiar from its smaller sister, the SM42 loco, it pulls up to the crossing at the stop and, having passed it, picks up speed on the straight line towards Gutowiec. The straight line stretches across the way that the aforementioned storm once passed through, so the train travels by the devastated stretches of forest that more closely resemble farmland or orchards, as the aerial shot clearly shows.
