This type of interchange/junction was unveiled at a conference in 2010 by Gilbert Chlewicki, the inventor of the "Diverging Diamond Interchange" (DDI), which is seeing a construction boom, mainly in the United States. It is an application of DDI, an IC with a unique shape in which the center lanes switch (diverge), and is intended as an improvement over existing partial cloverleaf ICs. It is one of a group of ICs/JCTs known as diverging types, the other being the "Diverging Windmill Interchange/Junction" which appeared in Season 1 and Season 2. When upgrading an existing IC, it is possible to reduce construction costs and increase efficiency, but as of 2018, it does not appear to have been built yet. Chlewicki, Gilbert. 2010.
