In December 1998, Surjit Kaur Athwal, a 27-year-old customs officer from Hayes, West London, boarded a flight to India with her mother-in-law and never came home. For seven years, her family insisted she had chosen to stay. The truth was something her sister-in-law, Sarbjit, had been trying to tell anyone who would listen since the day Surjit vanished. This is the story of a British-Punjabi family, a culture of silence weaponised as honour, and the woman who finally broke it.
