In this video, we ride the Chikuhi Line, which has been split into two lines, each following a completely different path. During the days of the Japanese National Railways (JNR), the Chikuhi Line connected Hakata Station to Imari Station. Although it changed direction at Higashi-Karatsu along the way, it was a fairly standard, non-electrified local line that continued on a single line from start to finish. However, a major remodel in 1983 brought about a major change. In the same year, JNR rerouted tracks within Karatsu City, and the Chikuhi Line's terminus in Karatsu City was moved from Higashi-Karatsu Station to Karatsu Station on the Karatsu Line. At the same time, some sections were abolished, and the East Line and West Line were separated by the Karatsu Line. In addition, within Fukuoka City, the Chikuhi East Line began operating in mutual through service with the Fukuoka City Subway (Airport Line), and the section between Meinohama and Karatsu was electrified with DC current. However, the section between Meinohama and Hakata, which now ran parallel to the subway, was abolished. Thus, the Chikuhi Line was divided into the Chikuhi East Line, which runs between Meinohama and Karatsu, and the West Line, which runs between Yamamoto (in Karatsu City) and Imari. The East Line, located near Fukuoka City and with direct access to the subway, has seen rapid residential development along the line. Currently, trains run every six or seven minutes during the morning rush hour between Meinohama and Chikuzen-Maebaru, near Fukuoka City, and every 15 minutes during the day. A reasonable frequency of trains is also maintained between Chikuzen-Maebaru and Karatsu on the Saga Prefecture side. The West Line, on the other hand, has become a typical Kyushu local line. It only serves local demand in Karatsu and Imari, with only nine round trips of local trains, fewer than in the days of the Japan National Railways. Although a commuter line, the Chikuhi Line (East Line) also offers beautiful views from the train window.
