SURYAMALANG.COM - Former police officer Brigadier Anton Kurniawan Stiyanto (AKS) is back in the spotlight after his failed attempt to escape from the Class II A Palangka Raya Penitentiary, Central Kalimantan, on Saturday (May 23, 2026). Anton, previously known as a police officer, is now serving a life sentence after being implicated in a shooting case against a resident in Katingan Regency. The case captured public attention and became one of the most significant criminal cases involving law enforcement officers in Central Kalimantan. Before being implicated in the crime, Anton was a member of the National Police serving in Central Kalimantan. However, his career ended after he was involved in a shooting that killed a resident in Katingan Regency. The case led to a lengthy legal process, ultimately leading to Anton's sentence of life imprisonment. This heavy sentence deprives him of the opportunity to receive reintegration rights and remissions like other inmates. The Head of the Central Kalimantan Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas), I Putu Murdiana, revealed that Anton is categorized as a high-risk inmate. "On the one hand, he is serving a life sentence, so integration rights or remission rights cannot be granted," said Putu Murdiana. According to him, the results of psychological and security assessments indicate that Anton poses a very high risk, thus drawing special attention from correctional authorities. "The assessment results indicate that he poses a very high risk," he said. Therefore, the Palangka Raya Class II A Prison had previously proposed Anton's transfer to the Nusakambangan Super Maximum Security Prison. He is suspected of using a pistol smuggled into the prison by his wife, Juwita. Based on initial investigations, the pistol entered the prison grounds after allegedly being hidden in a bag that officers failed to inspect. The firearm was then handed over to Anton during visiting hours. While attempting to break through the prison exit door, Anton pointed a pistol at officers and pulled the trigger twice. Fortunately, the gun did not discharge, resulting in no casualties. Prison officers eventually managed to subdue Anton and thwart his escape attempt. An investigation revealed the pistol used was a non-lethal firearm with seven live rounds still loaded. An inmate convicted of a police shooting at a civilian died in his cell at the Class II A Palangka Raya Penitentiary. He was found by guards unconscious at approximately 8:35 PM WIB on Saturday (May 30, 2026). Anton was sentenced to life imprisonment for aggravated theft, which resulted in the victim's death. After the officer on duty and the guard commander checked Anton's condition, he was found weak and still breathing. Anton was pronounced dead a few hours later, at approximately 11:35 PM WIB. "But a few moments later he stopped breathing," he explained. Anton's body was then taken to Bhayangkara Hospital. An autopsy is currently being performed to determine the cause of death.
