It is here that she is said to have spent her last days after she followed the apostle John. Discovered in the late 19th century by French missionaries, the site grew enormously in popularity in the 1950s. Large numbers of Muslims spontaneously started to pray in Mary’s house. As the mother of the prophet Jesus, she embodies the qualities of a universal mother who transcends religious boundaries.
