The story of Spartacus forces us to question many things, starting with the good faith of some ancient historiography: behind the "servile war" lie countless inconsistencies and contradictions. Appian's suggestion that the Italics, already twice rebels, followed Spartacus armed in a final, furious, and desperate attempt to break Roman rule allows us to connect the story of the Thracian gladiator to the final act of that Second Italy, which would never see its civilization flourish, swept away by the Roman armies.
