Very Ornate 1891 Door Knob Set Restoration | Random Restoration
Welcome! Today I will be continuing my hardware restoration spree by restoring an old ornate bronze door knob set, manufactured by Mallory Wheeler (&) Co. in the 1890s. Old ornate hardware like this is usually has some damage, but the door knob I started to restore was in very rough shape. Not only was it rusted to the spindle, but the front of the design had significant damage from someone's previous attempt at removing the very rusty spindle. My door knob removal (from the spindle) attempt started with a two week soak in the rust remover, followed by a lot of penetrating fluid. In the end I was forced to use a cutting disc to cut off the spindle. I then used a grinding disc to grind the spindle flat prior to drilling it out. Then I filed the spindle until I was able to peel it off and eventually remove it. At this time I decided to purchase a second door knob to restore and complete the set with, and as well bought a couple of ornate brass rosettes that somewhat matched this design, despite being from a different manufacturer. Now it was time for some paint removal from all this old hardware. After applying the paint stripper I waited about 20 minutes and was able to use a soft wire brush to remove the paint from all of the hardware. Then I had to repair all of the damage on the hardware from 120+ years of use. There was a huge amount of sanding that I had to do to remove all of the damage, but I got there in the end! There were some defects that came from the factory on the door knob I started with which I left, but aside from that everything turned out looking quite nice! After the door knob repair I moved onto polishing all of the parts. After a thorough cleaning moved onto painting the recessed areas on the door knobs and rosettes. After a week's wait everything was dried an ready for the rebuild. I assemble everything onto a display I made out of a piece of scrap wood. It was planed down, sanded and chiseled out to accommodate a small mortise lock so the handles could be properly installed. Although this wasn't a perfect restoration, I will be making up for it in my next restoration which may very well be my best restoration, so stay tuned!
