1800s Beaded Oval Mortise Lock Set Restoration | Random Restoration,

Welcome! Today I'll be restoring an old ornate 1800s to early 1900s beaded oval mortise lock set. I had previously installed this hardware on my workshop door, and finally decided to restore the door (off camera) and restore the hardware. The lock for this set was made by Sargent & Co., though the backplates and door knobs may be from a different manufacturer. To start this restoration I quickly removed the interior components of the mortise lock. The lock was not particularly rusty this time 'round haha. I then ground down the rivets that held the faceplate on and carefully hammered the rivets out since the case of the lock is cast iron. Then it was time for paint stripping. For the lock case, which was originally japanned, I simply scraped the japanning off. The remaining parts were soaked in a gel paint stripper to remove any paint from the surface. None of these parts were very rusty, but I threw them all (including the bronze parts even though it wasn't necessary) in the rust remover overnight. I have always used Evapo Rust for rust removal, and it certainly does great job! The next day I went ahead and started work on the rust free mortise lock. I first straightened out the bent faceplate, then tapped threads through the faceplate so I could reattach it with screws rather than rivets. Then it was time for making keys. Well I guess I only made one key on camera for this lock, but I do have a second one I made off camera. I'm too used to double key locks that I couldn't resist making two, and I have a couple hundred original uncut antique bit keys (skeleton keys) that I have so I might as well make more than one haha. Then it was time for painting the Sargent lock case/ case cover. Next up with this hardware restoration was sanding the faceplate. The finish I decided to use was what would have been called an "antique bronze" finish. Hardware was also offered in an antique/old copper, brass, bronze and silver. The faceplate was sanded, chemically blackened then a bit of time was spent polishing in areas to remove the blackening. A quick bit of lacquering later and the faceplate was done. The same process was repeated with the door knobs and backplates. The backplates did require a bit of repair work on some extra loose collars, but a bit of hammering later and they were good as new haha.
