In this second episode of my journey through Saudi Arabia I travel to the Edge of the World, located in the rocky deserts, an adventurous day trip from Riyadh. This is arguably one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Saudi Arabia, and part of the much larger Tuwaiq Escarpment. It earned its nickname because of the clear uninterrupted views of the horizon. I traveled here with a tourist guide (Mr. Ismael) who explained me more about this fascinating place. There are no clear pathways and signs, so if you travel to this region please be very careful. After hiking around the Edge of the World, we also visited a cave hidden in the ground, and eventually a camel market on the way back to Riyadh. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast. Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. In these series I hope to give a glimpse into what was once an almost ‘forbidden place’ in the Middle East for independent travelers, and is now open for visitors from around the world.
