Russian Tango Aircraft With APD-520 Engine Makes First Flight

Russia has reached another significant milestone in its civil aviation modernization program as the S7 Group's Tango training aircraft successfully completed its first flight powered by the indigenous APD-520 "Leader" piston engine. The successful maiden flight marks the beginning of flight certification testing for the new engine-airframe combination and represents another step toward reducing dependence on imported aviation technology. Developed by Spectra Aircraft, the four-seat composite Tango is designed for civilian pilot training and private aviation, with serial production targeted for 2027. In this video, we examine why this flight matters, how the APD-520 engine was developed, the extensive testing carried out before takeoff, and how the Tango program has evolved since its first prototype flew in 2024. We also explore how the aircraft fits into Russia's wider strategy of building an entirely domestic aviation ecosystem—from aircraft design and engines to certification and manufacturing. Could the Tango become the backbone of Russia's future flight schools and general aviation sector?
