I lead the beginners through the first steps of cross country skiing (skate technique), working through a structured 9 step progression designed to build balance, confidence, and movement patterns from scratch. When we introduce the poles our main focus is on timing. The three participants were completely different ages and ability levels, which makes this a great insight into how I approach teaching skate skiing fundamentals in real conditions. You’ll see exactly how we move from basic balance drills through to early propulsion and rhythm. Two key details: Falling and hopping are both critical to early stages of learning to ski. If you’re new to cross country skiing or thinking about learning skate skiing, this gives you a realistic look at the drills and structure I use to get people started properly. There are drills in here that teach "bad habits" but they are inconsiquential in my experience. Filmed in Bessans, France. And it was -20 so my microphone stopped working. So I did a voice over instead :) Thanks to Ronnie, Dave, and Lordy for letting me film the lesson.
