The Serra Pelada gold mine originated with the discovery of gold at the Três Barras Farm between 1979 and 1980. The Serra Pelada gold mine underwent federal government intervention early in the 1980s. Gold mining in Serra Pelada attracted thousands of people to the region in the hope of enriching themselves and improving their lives. An estimated 100,000 workers worked in the Serra Pelada mine, and the volume of gold extracted was approximately 40,000 tons. Working conditions in Serra Pelada were extremely precarious, characterized by exhausting workdays, unfavorable weather conditions with intense heat, lack of safety, exposure to toxic substances, threats, conflicts, and other situations.
