FREEZING Solo Wild Camping on Scafell Pike
Scafell Pike Summit Wild Camp - I set off from Seathwaite in Borrowdale for a night on Englands highest mountain - Scafell Pike at 3210ft. My route took me up the side of Ruddy Gill in the shadow of Great End, and from the top of Ruddy Gill onwards to Esk Hause at 2500ft. The ascent continued past Great End, Ill Crag and Broad Crag, then the final ascent to Scafell Pike summit. Due to the extremely rocky nature of the summit, pitching opportunities are scarce, however I had spotted this area on a previous trip and was hopeful I could get my tent pitched there. My kit consisted of the Hilleberg Akto tent, Alpkit Pipedream 400 sleeping bag, and the Thermarest NeoAir Xlite sleeping mat. Temperatures dipped just below freezing on a very cold but stunning night, with clear skies overhead. On my return route I retraced my steps to the top of Ruddy Gill before continuing past Sprinkling Tarn and Styhead Tarn under the shadow of Great Gable, before returning to Seathwaite. A 12 mile walk with 3700ft of ascent.
