Un Soldado en la caficultura: Hermetia illucens

The UN projects a global population growth of 12% (8.6 billion people) by 2030. Given this scenario, the demand for food is very high, generating negative environmental impacts due to the intensification of agricultural production and the generation of organic waste. The main sources of protein for human consumption are of animal origin, and feeding these animals requires large quantities of protein and lipid sources, representing between 50% and 70% of the total production cost. In recent years, the use of insects for converting agricultural waste and obtaining protein for animal and human consumption has intensified; among these insects is the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens. The larvae of this fly can feed on organic waste. Their crude protein levels are around 62%, and their fat content is up to 39%. Furthermore, they do not store pesticides or mycotoxins, making them a favorable option for obtaining protein for animal feed and organic fertilizer, all within a circular bioeconomy model. This seminar will provide an overview of this insect and its potential use in Colombian coffee farming.
