Less than 48 hours in Phnom Penh, Cambodia! In this video, Ds_Planet takes you on a quick but intense journey through the Cambodian capital. From breathtaking bird's-eye views of the city skyline to the vibrant energy of the Night Market (the ultimate spot to try local street food!), we explore the contrasts of this incredible city. However, you cannot truly understand Phnom Penh without facing its history. During my stay, I visited the genocide memorial site to pay my respects and learn about the country's tragic past. Between April 17, 1975, and January 1979, the totalitarian Khmer Rouge regime, led by dictator Pol Pot, seized power. Their goal was to transform the country into a rural, agrarian utopia, completely abolishing urban life, money, religion, and Western culture. The capital, Phnom Penh, was forcibly evacuated in just a few days, and millions of citizens were sent to forced labor camps in the countryside. Anyone considered an "intellectual"—including teachers, doctors, or even people who wore glasses—became a target. Memorial Sites in Phnom Penh: Tuol Sleng (S-21 Prison): A former high school in the heart of the capital that the regime turned into a brutal interrogation and torture center. Today, it stands as the Genocide Museum. Choeung Ek (The Killing Fields): Located just outside the city, this was the main execution site where thousands of S-21 prisoners were taken to be killed. It now houses a Buddhist memorial stupa filled with the skulls of the victims. It is estimated that in less than four years, between 1.5 and 2 million people (about a quarter of the entire population at the time) lost their lives to execution, torture, starvation, and disease. Remembering this history is vital to truly understanding the extraordinary strength, resilience, and warmth of the Cambodian people we meet on the streets of Phnom Penh today.
