During the Edo period, when a large gold and silver vein was discovered in Aikawa, the Tokugawa Shogunate made Sado a direct territory (tenryo) and established a magistrate's office in Aikawa. The mining town of Aikawa flourished, attracting people from all over the country, and the gold and silver mined in Sado supported the Shogunate's finances. Even today, Aikawa retains its quaint scenery, including its brick-walled streets and bell tower.
