Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him." (John 6:53, 56) Praise be to Jesus! It is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Corpus Christi. In today's Gospel, Jesus proclaims the most core and terrifying truth of our faith. It is that without eating and drinking His flesh and blood, there is no 'life' itself. However, if we look closely at the modern Catholic Church today, we face a truly painful reality. Jesus clearly spoke with His life on the line, saying, "Without the Eucharist, there is no salvation, no life," yet for countless believers, the Sacrament of the Eucharist has been reduced to merely a holy rite performed in the middle of Mass, or an 'accessory' to adorn their religious life. It is hard to find anyone who grieves as if their life is about to end just because they do not receive Holy Communion. Why on earth has the significance of the Sacrament of the Eucharist been so diminished and its power so lost? Why are we spiritually starving to death while feeding on the Bread of Life? Today, we will delve into the causes of this fatal spiritual disease and meditate deeply on how the Eucharist leads us to perfect happiness. In the 1940s, Dr. Rene Spitz, an Austrian psychiatrist, conducted research on survival and development on babies housed in orphanages and nurseries at the time. The facilities at the time were hygienically perfect. Babies were supplied with premium milk and baby food at precise times every day, with perfectly calculated calories and nutrients. For fear of catching germs, nurses did not hold the babies but instead fixed milk bottles next to their cradles so the babies could suckle on them themselves. The 'food' necessary for physical survival was provided 100 percent perfectly. However, a horrific result, unimaginable even, emerged. A staggering 37 percent of the babies raised on this perfect diet were left to languish and die within two years from an unknown illness. Even the surviving babies suffered severe delays in physical development and intelligence, falling into a state of emotional paralysis where they stared blankly into space and repeated meaningless gestures. The medical community called this condition "Hospitalism." To find the cause, Dr. Spitz observed another group: babies living with their mothers in a women's prison. The environment was far more unsanitary than the orphanage, and nutrition was woefully inadequate. Yet, not a single baby died there; they grew up strong and cheerful. What was the difference? The babies in the orphanage ate only "food (calories)" from cold glass jars, whereas the babies in the prison ate their rations while held in their mothers' arms, listening to their mothers' heartbeats, making eye contact, and sharing body heat. This great experiment proclaims a very clear truth to humanity. The nourishment a mother gives to her baby is not merely nutrition, but 'the mother's life' itself. The real reason a baby craves its mother's milk is not simply because it is hungry. It is because, through that milk, it wants to feel the mother's warm embrace, confirm a 'relationship of becoming perfectly one with her,' and 'stay' within that love. Life does not come from calories entering the mouth, but from a 'connection (staying)' with the immense love that embraces me. This is precisely why we fail to feel the effects of the Eucharist. There is a middle school son in a certain family. His mother loves him and prepares a warm meal with great care every evening. Her only wish is for her son to chatter away about what happened at school today while eating, make eye contact with her, and 'stay' with her. However, this son's mind is filled with nothing but thoughts of the 'latest model smartphone' his mother promised to buy him tomorrow. As soon as he sits at the table, he searches for smartphone models and stuffs his food down as if he were drinking it. When his mother asks, "Is the food delicious?" Even when asked, he merely nods half-heartedly, his mind entirely at the store. He even complains about the food. To this son, what meaning of life could the heartfelt meal his mother prepared hold? Food is merely a rite of passage he must endure out of necessity to obtain a smartphone, and his mother's table is nothing more than a boring waiting room. Food devoid of love loses its meaning. This is the true face of our church today. Countless Christians attend Mass to receive the Eucharist, yet they have no interest in loving Jesus Himself or dwelling with Him. Their hearts are entirely focused on the "smartphones" the Lord can grant—namely, the success of their own businesses, their children's acceptance into prestigious universities, health that allows them to live a long and healthy life, ...
