She was born in Pusan in 1922. At the age of five she and four siblings went to Japan, where she was raised by Pai Ku-ja, the daughter of her father’s sister, often referring to her as her sister. Huhm learned dance at the same time she worked toward earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics at Jitsen Women’s University in Tokyo. She immigrated to Hawai`i in 1949, and soon began teaching dance informally to students in her home. ABOUT THE STUDIO: Officially opened in 1950, the Halla Pai Huhm Korean Dance Studio is the only continuous source of Korean dance and music in Hawai`i. Students have included both Koreans and non-Koreans, the young and senior citizens. In 1973 Mary Jo Freshley (Myung Sa Pai), a former physical education instructor at Hawaii’s Kamehameha Schools, began assisting at the Studio. She received the highest ranking teaching certificate in the Pai tradition from Halla Huhm. With Mrs. Huhm’s death in 1994, Ms. Freshley became the director and the main teacher at the Studio. The Studio is committed to maintaining the tradition of Korean music and dance performance established by Halla Pai Huhm and to supporting a broad array of Korean dance and music activities.
