The Brenner Railway is a railway from Innsbruck in Austria via the Brenner Pass to Bolzano in Italy and so on to Verona. Due to the enormous growth in goods traffic on the Brenner Pass, the Brenner railroad now no longer meets the modern standard for rail transport. Tight arches, steep slopes and two different electric current systems ensure low transport capacity. In order to make the Brenner railroad suitable as a link in the European TEN railway network, it was decided in 2011 to build the Brenner base tunnel between the Austrian Patsch and the Italian Franzensfeste.
