Vivid Brushstrokes in Traditional Chinese Painting | Workshop with Henry Li at LMU (1/3)

This workshop was part of the China in Practice series, sponsored by the China Study Group at Loyola Marymount University. More than 30 students and faculty members attended to experience firsthand the art of Chinese brush painting. The session began with an interview led by Dr. Li Yu, who explored Henry Li’s artistic journey. Henry shared how his background in archaeology has influenced his art, demonstrating this connection through a landscape painting inspired by a Neolithic pictograph. In response to an audience question about the differences between Chinese and Western art, Henry guided participants in painting a Chinese orchid using a calligraphic approach. The workshop continued with a dynamic exploration of various subjects, including a landscape with a rising sun, a snake with plum blossoms in honor of the Year of the Snake, and a mother panda with her cub amid bamboo. It was an inspiring and engaging event—well worth the two-hour drive home!
