Have you been hearing the term Gemba a lot and don't know what it means? My name is Renato Moura and I'll quickly explain what it means when someone says they want to practice Gemba! No, they're not talking about going to the gym. They're using a term well-known in the TOYOTA production system and also in LEAN MANUFACTURING. GEMBA is a Japanese term that means "real place," and it's commonly used to refer to being where the problems happen. In other words, we can't solve company problems from inside our office; we have to get off our "butts" and be in the field, observing the day-to-day operations and truly understanding the routine, understanding the problems, how they arise, and the difficulty of dealing with them. It seems quite simple when we put it that way, but it's amazing how many professionals believe that a few minutes in the field and a chat with the operators and colleagues who are there every day is enough to create solutions and draw complete conclusions. And that's how flawed solutions are born, robbing Peter to pay Paul. Then the people who experience the day-to-day operations are left without understanding what you did, and the result of that implementation doesn't materialize. In fact, that's assuming there's actually an implementation, when the creator of the desk solution is with the staff implementing, training, and monitoring. This applies to any company. In consulting, I've seen many problems that exist simply because colleagues don't get up from their desks to have a one-on-one conversation with each other, leaving it to email or simply assuming that the other person must have understood, because after all, it's obvious, isn't it? No matter how tempting the air conditioning is and how well-upholstered the chair is, getting up and solving the problem will bring much more dynamism and objectivity to your day-to-day work, and better results for the company!
