Botan Dōrō 牡丹燈籠

"Open the door, my only one — I crossed the river the dead don't cross." Kara… koron… kara… koron… A wooden sandal echoes down a road no living foot should walk. A single peony lantern glows in the dark, and behind it drifts a bride who would not let death end her love. She loved a man she was forbidden to have — and she withered away from longing, dying without ever holding him. But love does not lie down so easily. Night after night her ghost returns, lantern in hand, climbing the stairs to the one she still calls her only one. He does not yet know that the woman in his arms has no heartbeat. By the time the paper prayers seal his door against her, it is already too late — for he loves her too. When the seal is torn and the morning comes, they find them together in the cold ground: bone against bone, her arms around the man she loved, the lantern burned to nothing. This is "Botan Dōrō" (牡丹燈籠 — The Peony Lantern), a tale of forbidden love, longing unto death, and a grudge that wears the soft face of devotion — a female-fronted symphonic gothic metal requiem fusing traditional Japanese instruments (koto, shakuhachi, shamisen, taiko) with funeral-doom guitars and a cathedral organ. This is the gentlest kind of yandere: a love so total it pulls the beloved down into the grave to lie beside it forever. 🩸 Concept: an imaginary horror game's main theme. The "kara-koron" you hear is the geta (wooden sandal) of the dead bride. The "peony lantern" she carries is the lamp that lights her path back to the living each night.
