Formula 1 1977 Austrian GP | Alan Jones Incredible First Win | Full Race

The 1977 Austrian Grand Prix at the Österreichring was a rollercoaster of drama, changing weather, engine failures, and a shock winner that stunned the Formula 1 paddock. The race began with a damp track, and only four drivers – Gunnar Nilsson, Arturo Merzario, Jean-Pierre Jarier, and Vern Schuppan – gambled on wet tyres. Pole sitter Niki Lauda led the slick-shod front runners into the new Hella Licht chicane, chased by James Hunt and Mario Andretti. But on lap one Lauda slid wide, dragging Hunt with him, and Andretti snatched the lead. Behind them, Clay Regazzoni spun off into the grass, and Vittorio Brambilla had an early off before rejoining. Nilsson immediately became the star of the damp opening laps. On wets, he sliced through the field with breathtaking moves, storming into the top four within just two tours. By lap four he was past Hunt, hunting down Andretti, while Merzario also climbed into the points. Meanwhile, Ian Scheckter suffered a violent crash at the chicane, his March tangled in the fencing, though miraculously no one else was collected. As the track dried, Nilsson dived into the pits for slicks on lap six, his Lotus team executing a lightning-fast stop. Although he rejoined in 13th, Nilsson’s pace was relentless, scything through the pack. Andretti’s early dominance ended abruptly when his Cosworth engine blew on lap 12, handing the lead to Hunt. Behind, Alan Jones in the Shadow was charging hard, overtaking Stuck and Scheckter with daring moves to climb into second. Lauda finally found rhythm in his Ferrari, battling into the top five, but Nilsson kept stealing the spotlight, overtaking Reutemann and Tambay before lining up Stuck and Scheckter. On lap 32 Nilsson pulled off two brilliant passes to grab third, shadowing Jones as the track fully dried. But heartbreak struck: his engine exploded in a cloud of smoke, ending a heroic drive. The race turned into a war of attrition. More Cosworth engines failed, including Tambay’s and eventually Hunt’s on lap 44, robbing McLaren of certain victory. Jody Scheckter also spun away a podium when he lost grip on wet grass while lapping Patrick Nève. In the end, Alan Jones clinched his maiden Formula 1 victory, and Shadow’s first ever win, a fairy-tale result for the small British team. Lauda salvaged second at his home Grand Prix, while Hans-Joachim Stuck thrilled the Austrian crowd with third, narrowly ahead of Reutemann. Ronnie Peterson inherited fifth, and Jochen Mass completed the points in sixth. The 1977 Austrian GP will always be remembered for Nilsson’s electrifying charge, Hunt’s cruel retirement, and Shadow’s incredible breakthrough victory with Jones – a true underdog story in the heart of the Styrian mountains. 📌 If you’re passionate about untold racing stories, forgotten heroes, and iconic Grand Prix moments that shaped the sport, please, consider subscribing to the channel, so you don’t miss future content.
