The new Cusco International Airport, located in Chinchero (at 3,700 meters above sea level, 2 km from the town and 15–28 km from the city of Cusco depending on the section), will replace the current Velasco Astete Airport with a 25,000 m² terminal equipped with departure/arrival areas, shops, security checkpoints, and immigration facilities. Designed to handle more than 8 million passengers annually, it will allow for direct international connections and boost tourism and regional socioeconomic development. Due to the distance to the city, the government promoted the Chinchero–Cusco commuter rail project: a 20–25 km line that will connect the airport to the city center in approximately 20 minutes (design speed of approximately 80 km/h), saving almost an hour compared to current transportation options. On August 7, 2025, the Korean consortium DOHWA–KNR presented the progress of its feasibility study (funded by ODA 2024; process running until September 2026), which evaluated routes, gradients, tunnels, viaducts, stations, and operating costs. The study prioritizes a route that minimizes impacts on residential and heritage areas (including an underground section to preserve the historic center) and projects strategic stations—Pachacutec, San Pedro, Poroy, Cachimayo, Piuray, and Chinchero—as well as a maintenance yard next to the airport and modern systems (signaling, electrification, and control). The studies show high traffic congestion in Cusco and a predominant tourist demand; they modeled fares (scenarios between S/5 and S/10) and recommend low prices to maximize passenger numbers and financial viability through high passenger volumes.
