Awake (from Celeste) [by Lena Raine] // Amy Turk

- C E L E S T E M O U N T A I N - - This memorial dedicated to those Who perished on the climb Chapter 2 is my favourite part of Celeste, and this one little moment has stayed with me ever since I first played the game on release in 2018. After the intensity of facing Badeline for the first time, hearing her harsh words of criticism for you and being chased through the stage, Madeline wakes up to discover it was all a dream... or was it? Celeste's story really hit me hard, and still does, because of the way it shows Madeline's climb up to the top of the mountain, and her conflict with Badeline as a metaphor for her struggles with anxiety and self esteem. I felt this moment very deeply, reading the words on the memorial. It seems clear to me that it refers not just to people who have not physically made it to the top of the mountain in the game, but equally those who haven't survived the hardships of their mental health struggles in real life. It's the most beautiful and poignant tribute, and one of many moments in this game that left me in tears. This was quite hard to adapt from piano to harp as it requires a really careful clarity in the melody that can be difficult to achieve in the high register, and low bass notes that had to be split in the left hand with awkward quick jumps. I'm not sure if the original version is truly for solo piano, or solo piano plus the bass octaves, but they add this wonderful heavy weight to the arrangement so I didn't want to leave them out.
