I've written it as "neuroplasticity," but it's about the replacement of nerve cells. That's the topic I'll be discussing. Neuroscience has changed a lot since I was a student about 20 years ago. In the past, depression was viewed more like natural history; that is, it was categorized and considered within those categories. Now, however, it's more common to see depressive symptoms as an inflammatory response in the brain. An inflammatory response occurs, causing some damage to the nerves, impoverishing the network system and leading to depression. That's a common perspective. In the past, depression was something that wasn't really understood, and once you got depressed, the cause was unknown and it would recur. It wasn't really understood, but recovery was possible by taking medication, and that could only be proven statistically. That was the case, but recently, I think the concepts of inflammatory responses and the spectrum of depression have become more common, at least over the past 10 or 20 years. When I started my YouTube channel four years ago, I explained depression in a more textbook-like, old-fashioned way, but the understanding and perception of depression itself has deepened, and the way we perceive it has changed, so I think this is the latest version. It changes quite a bit. It's interesting, isn't it? ◾️Problems, Stress, and Depressive Symptoms What I often explain using the biopsychosocial model is that when there's a problem, stress accumulates, and the mind and body become fatigued, leading to depressive symptoms. I say things like, "This is depression." As a result of years of stress, inflammation occurs in the brain, leading to a kind of impoverishment and depression. Stress accumulates when there's a problem. This inevitably leads to a pathological structure. The reason why similar things are likely to happen is often attributed to cognitive distortions, the person's inherent constitution, IQ issues, or developmental disorders, which make them more susceptible to these problems and stress. For this, medication is used, and if there are problems, welfare services are employed to resolve them. Counseling is often mentioned as a way to address the problems. ◾️Causes of Depression Depression can be caused by various factors, including genetic issues, infections during pregnancy, exposure to stress, and the effects of alcohol and marijuana. It can also be caused by childhood abuse, prolonged stress, traumatic experiences, or intense trauma. Depression can also be caused by the effects of drugs, alcohol, and other substances. Physical illnesses, various diseases, brain tumors, steroids, etc., can all contribute to depression, as can prolonged exposure to various stressors. When we talk about inflammation, we mean inflammation in all kinds of things, but inflammation in the nervous system can lead to depression. That's the current research approach, and what we're starting to understand. It's thought that various factors contribute to it. It's said that about 10% of the population, both children and adults, might have experienced depression, and that a few percent of the population is currently being treated for it. ◾️Brain Activity The brain is difficult to imagine, but do you have one? The brain is often described as being like tofu, but to be more precise, it's like a substance made of tangled threads that have been twisted toget...
