Is Excel VBA Dead? The Consultant Take

Is Excel VBA dead? It seems every month somebody influential makes this claim online. But it’s not the full story. In fact, it’s completely the wrong way to think about Excel automation. In this video, I walk you through the timeline of Excel automation tools starting with the most recent (Copilot – 2023) and ending with the oldest (VBA – 1993). I show you the pros and cons of each and give you the consultant take – insight on how I actually use each Excel automation tool in my day-to-day consultancy work. And yes, there’s still a prominent role for Excel VBA. So, rather than making bold claims about tools being ‘dead’ or ‘changing everything', I try to think about Excel automation differently. The truth is the consultant takes the pragmatic view, appreciating the strengths and weaknesses of each tool, compiling a toolkit, and matching the tool to the situation at hand.
