In 2016, four soldiers were brutally murdered in Vista al Lago, Ilopango, in an attack perpetrated by gangs that dominated the area. This crime was a reflection of the high level of violence El Salvador was experiencing, largely due to the failed security policies of the then government, which failed to contain the growth of gangs or protect its own security forces. The lack of an effective strategy allowed these criminal groups to act with impunity, claiming the lives of hundreds of officers in an unequal war.
