Journalist Jon Sistiaga exposes the stark reality of the streets in Honduras's major cities, where "maras"—extremely violent youth gangs—exert an iron grip on drug trafficking throughout the country. With an average of 19 homicides a day, Honduras has become the most violent country in the world not at war. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the homicide rate reaches 80 per 100,000 inhabitants. In just three days after his arrival, Sistiaga witnessed a dozen murders. Among the victims were taxi drivers, professionals, criminals, and gang members. It is a ruthless and seemingly pointless violence, where killing is not just a tool, but an end in itself. Young people fight to the death to control even a simple street corner for drug trafficking. The maras dominate entire areas of the country. The drug traffickers dictate the rules. The state is overwhelmed, the police lack resources, and impunity is deeply entrenched. This documentary was produced by Canal+ and directed by Jon Sistiaga.
