Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, also lovingly known as Mother Cabrini, was an Italian-born Catholic nun who became the first United States citizen to be canonized as a saint. Canonized on July 7, 1946, by Pope Pius XII, she is venerated globally as the patron saint of immigrants, hospital administrators, and impossible causes. 🌟 Early Life & Vocation • Humble Origins: Born on July 15, 1850, in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, Italy, she was the youngest of 13 children. • Frail Health: Born two months premature, she struggled with delicate health and weak lungs her entire life. • Missionary Dreams: As a child, she drew inspiration from missionary stories. She would dress her dolls as nuns and float them down rivers in toy boats, pretending they were heading to missions. • Name Change: She was not accepted into local religious orders due to her fragile physical state, she persevered. At age 27, she took her vows and added "Xavier" to her name to honor the great missionary St. Francis Xavier. ⛵ Go West, Not East In 1880, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Hoping to fulfill her lifelong dream of evangelizing in the East, she traveled to Rome to ask Pope Leo XIII for permission to go to the East. Instead, the Pope told her to go "not to the East, but to the West." He urged her to travel to the United States to assist millions of Italian immigrants facing intense poverty, discrimination, and spiritual neglect in American cities. 🏙️ Her Radical Work in the Americas • Arrival in NYC: Arriving in New York City on March 31, 1889, she was initially told by the local archbishop to return home to Italy due to a lack of resources. She flatly refused, stating she was obeying the Pope. • Tireless Builder: Despite a severe lifelong fear of water, she crossed the Atlantic Ocean dozens of times to set up missions. • 67 Institutions: By the time of her death, she had established 67 orphanages, schools, and hospitals across New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and parts of Europe and Latin America. 🕊️ Death and Legacy Mother Cabrini passed away from chronic endocarditis on December 22, 1917, at the age of 67.
