Ursula von der Leyen is planning the next major intervention in the digital lives of all EU citizens: Under the name "Social Media Plus," the President of the European Commission intends to present a proposal on Monday that goes far beyond a simple ban on social media for minors. In the future, not only Instagram, TikTok, and similar platforms would be affected, but also app stores, video games, video platforms, and even AI chatbots. The centerpiece of the plan: an EU app for age verification, for which potentially every user would have to identify themselves with their national identity card. Officially, von der Leyen's aim is to protect young people. However, critics see this as a gateway for far-reaching surveillance and the possibility of tracking online opinions. Even the German Ethics Council, scientists, and youth organizations are warning against it. Intriguingly, von der Leyen herself explicitly cites the Corona app as a model for the new verification system.
