June 2026: This is a report on squid fishing in the Manazuru area, departing from Odawara. The boat was the Daiichi Sakaguchi Maru from Hayakawa Port in Odawara. While squid fishing seems to be good everywhere this season, we chose an Odawara boat in the western part of Sagami Bay, where the catches are particularly good. All three boats were full. A characteristic of the squid in this area is that they show up as mid-water reactions! In other words, it's like fast-moving squid are scurrying around in the mid-water column. If you get your rig to the right depth and the squid come in at just the right time, you can catch multiple squid at once! The important things are not to be late in casting and to get your rig to the depth indicated by the captain. I've been participating since last year and have tried various fishing methods, but recently the squid seem to be moving particularly fast, so the most reliable method for catching multiple squid at once seems to be to align the top of the rig above the indicated depth and, if the timing is right, either have them bite immediately or wait in ambush. On this day, the captain had already found a good spot early in the morning, so I tried the same pattern, and it worked perfectly, resulting in multiple catches and a high number of squid. Please note that this fishing method is just one example of how to find mid-water reactions, as it was the pattern that worked on this particular day. This method may not work on all days, so it's best to experiment to find the pattern that works best on any given day.
