The King Blues - The Stupidest Animal In The Zoo

To me personally, the greatest opening track ever is “Maxwell Murders” by Rancid on ‘…And Out Come The Wolves’ the way the bass does three quick notes and its just in, bang, no fucking about. I wanted to have that same feeling with this record and that album was referred to a lot. I set the BPM on logic to the same as that song but it still sounded slow, so I just kept turning it up until it was as fast as I could play. I threw down some crudely played guitars and bass on the demo to have something to write to. I’ve always loved dual vocals in punk bands like Blatz, Zero Tolerance and Extreme Noise Terror and it was during our other short-lived band Pho Queue Crew that we discovered Marianne had a voice that was perfect for punk. I really wanted this album to showcase it. The lyric was inspired by a quote credited to both Frederic Jameson and Slavoj Zizek in Mark Fisher’s brilliant book “Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?” that says “It’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism”. I’m really proud of the lyrics in the first verse especially that proclaims that we – humans - are the stupidest animal in the zoo because of this. The lyric sheet quote is from Murray Bookchin, a hugely influential anarchist who’s vital 1971 book “Post Scarcity Anarchism” changed the activist game and is a spiritual forefather to Aaron Bastani’s 2019 book “Fully Automated Luxury Communism”. Both are brilliant works of utopian thinking in the modern age.
