VENEZIA - Chiesa di San Raffaele Arcangelo e Chiesa di San Sebastiano

00:00 - Church of San Raffaele Arcangelo 06:44 - Church of San Sebastiano Church of San Sebastiano: The current church was begun in 1505 on a project by Antonio Abbondi, known as Scarpagnino, was finished in 1548. The new building therefore has a classical facade, but with a Renaissance interior. The church has an important pictorial cycle by Paolo Veronese, who decorated the ceiling of the sacristy, the central nave, the frieze, the eastern part of the choir, the main altar, the doors of the organ panels and the presbytery. Among these are the three paintings on the ceiling of the nave: Scenes from the life of Esther. The artist himself is buried in the church, near the organ. His brother Benedetto is also buried in the church. Church of San Raffaele Arcangelo: The church stands in one of the oldest areas of the city, one of the first to be permanently inhabited. According to tradition, it would be one of the eight churches that San Magno, bishop of Oderzo, had built at the dawn of the city, thus dating back to the seventh century. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the precarious static conditions of the building necessitated a further complete reconstruction, which was completed in 1639. The sculpture by Sebastiano Mariani The Angel Raffaele with Tobiolo on the entrance portal and the valuable fresco by Francesco Fontebasso: S. Michele chasing Lucifer in the central nave stand out. In the central nave stands a wonderful wooden pulpit from 1687, decorated with sculptures.
