What Happened To Pacific Southwest Airlines? "The World's Friendliest Airline"
PSA was best known for its smiles and its sense of humor for 39 years. They're regarded as America's first low-cost airline and the unofficial flag carrier of California during its time in operation. They went from a small, intrastate airline to large influential carrier in the western US that helped set the standard for future air travel trends. The creator of Southwest Airlines, Herb Kelleher, studied PSA before creating Southwest, and while he didn't necessarily steal their operating manual, the one he ended up creating for Southwest was very similar. PSA didn't receive much in return for giving their grand tour to Kelleher, knowledge of low-cost operations was key for learning how to run an airline post-deregulation. IATA Code: PS IACO Code: PSA Callsign: "PSA" Years Active: 1949 - 1988 Headquarters: San Diego, CA Hubs: Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN), San Fransisco (SFO) Fate: Merged into USAir (Later US Airways) Like and subscribe for more videos! Follow me on instagram: @avgeek_747 SOME CLARIFICATIONS Yeah, I realized I said "BEA 146" and not "BAE 146" - which is the correct way. Also, discussing how competition works in a free market can be tricky, so I've given my interpretation of how the merger with USAir could have played out differently, and how it influenced the industry going forward. There are many other possibilities that could be considered, but I've written down what seemed most likely. Also, some aircraft types have been purposefully left out for the sake of story telling (ie DC-6 and MD-80s) so I tried to show them visually when possible.
