The moment of "awakening" is truly a moment to remember: after a simple battery charge, the 155-hp OM366A turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine starts on the first try, roaring with that sonorous sound that only a 1990s Mercedes engine can deliver, without filters, without unnecessary electronics, purely mechanical and full of torque even at low revs. Obviously, the tires were the real weak point: worn to the point of being slick. We choose to replace them with the legendary Continental MPT80s, tires designed to withstand any terrain, from mud to rock, from sand to the sharp marble of the quarries. And this is where the Unimog comes in: in the Antica Cava Moschini, at the gateway to the Ossola Valley, where the famous pink Candoglia-Ornavasso marble, also used for Milan's Cathedral, is quarried, our special truck negotiates narrow tunnels, total humidity, and sharp rocks to retrieve a priceless one-and-a-half-ton block of marble for transport to a mountain pasture. This is where you truly understand why the Unimog is unique. Born as a "Universal Motor Device," it is a vehicle designed to do it all: compact and agile like a tractor, but with the payload of a truck, all-wheel drive, portal axles to overcome obstacles, a manual transmission, and 16 gears with low gear to tackle impossible slopes. Steep climbs, tight bends, steep descents, deep fords: nothing stops it, and everything works thanks to the perfect combination of mechanics and tires. The MPT80s keep pace in all conditions, adapting pressure and grip to the terrain, ensuring safety and traction even when fully loaded. The episode deliberately blends action, technology, and history: it takes us from the depths of a mountain to the Alpine peaks, recounting not only an incredible vehicle, but also the beauty and history of a precious material like Candoglia-Ornavasso pink marble. Ultimately, the Unimog isn't just a special truck: it's a universal machine, a tireless giant, capable of working where no other vehicle could reach, and one that continues to amaze even after decades.
