Dangar Island is one of Sydney, Australia's most unique communities. It is an island located within the Hawkesbury River, the only way that residents can access the island is by ferry or water taxi. The island has no cars, except for some authorised vehicles, residents usually move about by walking, golf buggy or bicycle. When residents do their shopping they will use community wheelbarrows to take them back to their homes. The island was originally inhabited by the "Guringai" indigenous Australians, and first explored by colonists in 1788 which is the same year that Australia was colonised. Today the island is partially developed with a population of just over 300 people that call the island home. On the island you will find a cafe, a post office, a restaurant and sporting club, a community hall, a fire station and ambulance station. There is also a lot of accomodation options for holiday makers. It is it the only place in the world that you can find a "Blackbutt-Rough-barked Apple Forest". Hundreds of species of animal also call the island home, including migratory birds that fly over 12,000 km from Alaska or Siberia.
